After the Funeral

After ceremonial services have been held to honor a loved one, and the final disposition has been completed, many survivors may wonder, “What do I do next?” It can be very difficult to adjust to life after the death of a loved one. Many people find solace in bereavement support groups to help deal with their grief.

There are also many legal, financial, and social matters to be taken care of when someone dies. A survivor may wish to seek professional assistance from an estate or probate attorney when dealing with the deceased’s property, estate, medical bills, debts and/or assets.

Additionally, even though the formal funeral or memorial rites have taken place, a mourner may wish to have a commemorative event to remember the life lived well after the death. Some people find comfort in having a family reunion on the anniversary of their deceased loved one’s passing or birthday. Many families have organized to set up memorial trusts, scholarship foundations, or even 5k walk/runs in their loved one’s memory.

It is important to know that although the tribute service may have come and gone, a person still has permission to grieve and may revisit different “places” in the grief journey.
